Laying Down the Stones of Self-Worth and Acceptance
Hey, beautiful soul,
Navigating the path to self-love can feel like building a sanctuary within ourselves, piece by piece, block by block. Each stone we lay down forms the foundation of a fulfilling life, rooted in deep self-worth and acceptance. Let's explore these building blocks together if you're ready now. It's about more than just treating ourselves; it's constructing a mindset that celebrates our intrinsic value every single day, every single moment.
The Cornerstone: Self-Compassion
Imagine self-compassion as the cornerstone of our self-love sanctuary. It's about greeting ourselves with the same warmth and understanding we'd offer a dear friend. As I've mentioned in previous articles this means embracing our imperfections, understanding that stumbling is part of the journey, and offering ourselves a soft landing spot of kindness when we do.
The Light: Gratitude Practices
Gratitude is the light that fills our sanctuary, illuminating the beauty in our lives and within us. By focusing on what we're thankful for, we shift our perspective from scarcity to abundance, recognizing the richness of our existence and our own unique contributions to the world.
The Ground: Mindfulness and Presence
Mindfulness lays the ground beneath our feet, keeping us rooted in the now. It's about experiencing life as it unfolds, moment by moment, with a heart open to everything we encounter. This practice allows us to break free from the chains of negative self-talk and bathe in the simple joy of being.
Storytime...
Once upon a time, many years ago, during a bustling life filled with deadlines, dreams, and daily routines, I found myself facing an unexpected journey—a journey with Lupus. This uninvited guest brought along its companions: stress, anxiety, and an overwhelming sense of losing control over my own body. It was a reality that demanded not just medical attention, but a profound shift in how I engaged with the world and myself.
In the early days, Lupus felt like a storm that had swept through my life, leaving a trail of uncertainty in its wake. The physical symptoms were challenging, but it was the mental and emotional toll that weighed the heaviest. Stress and anxiety became my constant shadows, exacerbating the flares and making every day a bit harder to face.
It was during this turbulent time in 2005 after the tragic death of my mother and a new life-changing diagnosis that I stumbled upon a beacon of light: the practice of Mindfulness and Presence. Initially, it seemed like another wellness trend, but desperate for solace, I decided to give it a chance. Little did I know, this decision would mark the beginning of a transformative journey.
I started small, with just five minutes of mindfulness meditation each morning. Sitting in silence, I focused on my breath—inhaling peace, exhaling chaos. It was a struggle at first; my mind wandered, my body ached, and doubts loomed large. But as days turned into weeks, something remarkable began to happen.
The constant noise in my mind started to quieten. The sharp edges of stress and anxiety softened, giving way to moments of tranquility and a newfound sense of control. I learned to be fully present in each moment, whether I was experiencing a flare or enjoying a good day. This practice of mindfulness taught me to observe my thoughts and emotions without judgment and to greet my symptoms with compassion rather than resistance.
As my mindfulness journey deepened, I incorporated presence into all aspects of my life. Eating became an exercise in mindfulness, where I savored each bite and listened to my body's needs. Walks in nature turned into meditative practices, where each step was an opportunity to connect with the earth and find grounding amidst the chaos of chronic illness.
The most profound change, however, was in my relationship with Lupus. Mindfulness and presence didn't cure me, but they gave me the tools to manage my symptoms more effectively. By reducing stress and anxiety, I noticed a decrease in my flares and an increase in my energy levels. I became more resilient, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.
This journey of mindfulness and presence has been a testament to the power of turning inward, of finding strength and peace in the stillness of being. It has taught me that even in the face of chronic illness, there is hope, there is a way to live fully and joyfully...and I have a choice.
To anyone walking a similar path, know this: Mindfulness and presence are not just practices but lifelines. They are the light that shines through the storm, guiding you back to yourself, to a place of peace and resilience. Embrace them, and watch as they transform your life, one breath at a time.
And so, my story is not just about living with Lupus; it's about thriving despite it. It's a heartfelt reminder that within us lies the power to face the greatest challenges and to find beauty and strength in the midst of adversity. This journey continues, with mindfulness and presence as my loyal companions, lighting the way toward a life defined not by what I face, but by how I choose to engage with it. The first time I felt like I had some control over my life. I am in gratitude for those moments of empowerment.
The Walls: Positive Affirmations
Building the walls with positive affirmations protects our inner sanctuary from the storms of doubt and criticism. Affirming our worth and capabilities acts like a shield, deflecting negativity and fortifying our sense of self. It's a powerful tool in crafting a mindset that supports growth and self-belief.
The Boundary: Healthy Boundaries
Healthy boundaries are the protective perimeter around our sanctuary. They mark where we end and others begin, allowing us to interact with the world authentically and without losing ourselves. It's a declaration of our value, ensuring we're treated with the respect and kindness we deserve.
The Reflection Pool: Regular
Self-Reflection
At the heart of our sanctuary lies the reflection pool of self-examination. Dipping into this pool through regular self-reflection allows us to see ourselves clearly—the depths of our dreams, the contours of our growth, and the spaces that still need nurturing. It's here that we learn to align our actions with our deepest truths.
Building a Life of Self-Love
Creating a life steeped in self-love is a journey of placing one block after another, each an act of dedication to ourselves. It's a process that unfolds day by day, each step a testament to our commitment to live authentically and lovingly.
